The Corporate Life: Staying on track when the office life is closing in
What are you to do when life starts getting busy? When you are asked to stay behind after work and do overtime? When you are so flat out that you feel like the walls are closing in on you?
I'm sure you have felt like that at some point in your life. If not, you are very fortunate!
A lot of people, just like you are in 'the grind' from 9 to 5 Monday to Friday.
So when are you actually to fit in exercise and keep yourself healthy and 'in shape' when work life starts closing in on you?
In this article I aim to provide you with some strategies and ideas that can help you get out of your funk and still look after your body.
First off, let me just say that I completely understand that work comes first. Absolutely.
I recognise that love doesn't pay the bills, money does! So it only makes sense that you work hard so that you can provide for family and those you care about.
With that said, I'd like to detail how you can manage your time more effectively and stay on track when you are time-poor.
1. Take micro-breaks every 1-2 hours
This is something that a lot of people can do, but continue to say "I don't have time". When I refer to micro-breaks, I am talking about anything that will get you away from work and up from your desk, ranging from 2-10 mins.
This will get your body moving, remove you from a poor sitting posture and also let the brain recover so you can become more productive when you return. Rather than surfing Facebook all day at work!
Remember: You don't find time, you MAKE time
2. Keep food, snacks and a protein shake at work
A combination of, lack of food preparation, organisation and laziness contribute to people making poor food choices at lunchtime.
When you get tired, bored and hungry, people turn to food.
But what happens if you don't have anything at work?
You end up choosing what's convenient. Things like fast-food, vending machines and soft drinks.
A fantastic way to combat this is by bringing some healthy alternatives and leaving them at work. Mixed nuts, trail mix, fruit and also a protein shake are all great options for you to turn to in times of need.
These will provide better fuel for your body and mind!
Brain function and sugar levels will benefit more in comparison to the other choices listed above.
This means you will be more productive with your time, rather than feeling sluggish and working at a slow pace.
3. Prioritise
This should be basic and pretty stock standard information, but still doesn't end up happening. Prioritise the most important tasks and get them done first.
If there is something that can wait, let it wait.
Do the most pressing tasks/jobs first and then complete the rest in the same fashion. The most important things require the most attention and focus, so stop leaving them until last.
Take pride in what you do and get in done in a timely, and prioritised manner!
4. Commit to certain tasks each day
This ties on from Number 3. When you start each day, you should know what you need to get done. If you don't, what the hell are you doing?
Write a list, prioritise, commit and then take action!
It really is that simple. You need to make a commitment to get work done.
The second thing you need to understand is the difference between being busy and being productive.
Ask yourself, "Will this help me get to my end goal? Is it necessary?"
If you do this, it will mean that you finish your work quicker and can get back doing the things you love -- like spending time with you girlfriend/boyfriend, partner or family.
You do want to do more of those things, don't you???
5) Value your time
This is something I have really taken ownership of and placed much more importance on. I used to be able to hang around waiting for people and just cruise through the day not accomplishing much.
NOT ANYMORE!
This has led to some hard decisions, losing touch with some close friends and also making a lot of sacrifices. The reason for this is that I no longer accept time-wasters and people that take advantage of me.
Life is too short for that crap.
You too could benefit by placing a high value on your time, because it's the only resource that you never get back.
If you have an agreement to finish work at 5, then leave work at 5. If you can get extra work done before others even show up to work so you can leave early, go for it!
These are the little things that separate the average Joe/Jane from the high-achievers on this planet.
I really hope that you took the time to read these words, but more importantly, I truly hope you start to implement these tips and get what you want out of life.
Remember, you are in full control of your choices and what you choose to spend your time on.
Until next time,
Take control of your life.
